Right, so it's D 'n B then? Nope. Both guys sure made a name for themselves
in the drum 'n bass genre, but recent years saw them shifting towards a much
more experimental level, in which genres such as electronica, dubstep,ambient
and triphop are mixed into one. That's pretty much what you can expect to
hear in this mix as well. It's hardly danceable, but that's clearly not the
objective here. Sit yourself down, press play, and get sucked into the
mysterious dark realms that are explored here.
Fabriclive 50 sounds a bit like Burial, a bit like Warp, with slight bits of
Bibio and Martyn on valium too, with every single of 31 (!) tracks merging in
perfectly. Riya's Seems Like is a beautiful, synth-driven opener, while tracks
such as Stray's Pushed and Starkwood (Consequence Remix) provide slightly
spooky collages of bass, broken rhythms, sound effects, and stripped down
percussion structures. The mix gets wilder at some point, such as on the
fantastic No Future (Consequence remix) by Instra:mental, although 'wild'
should be taken rather relatively. Across its entire playtime the mix breathes
a spooky, proto-ambient kinda vibe in which the use of four-to-the-floor beats
is kept to a minimum. It's all about the entrancing effects and sinister bass
here, with the result being one of the most intriguing Fabric mixes ever.
Fabriclive 50 has become a highly adventurous instalment in one of the best
series on the planet. Due to its experimental nature, this mix might not be
the easiest nut to crack, but listen to it a couple of times and you'll
eventually get to hear a simply beautiful piece of work.
